Sisters Gertrude and Ella Mae Murdie were born in Imlay City and graduated from Imlay City High School.  They spent their careers in the nursing profession, returning to the Imlay City area after they retired.  Ella Mae Murdie served as Director of Nursing at four hospitals in two states.  Gertrude Murdie worked at hospitals in World War II in three countries.  The sisters vacationed extensively throughout the world.  They traveled to many countries including India, Egypt, South Africa, and Ireland.

The creation of Murdie Educational Fund in 2004, made it possible for the sisters to encourage others to share their passion of caring for people and animals.  The scholarship supports students from Almont, Dryden, and Imlay City who wish to pursue a medical field degree within the state of Michigan. Students may receive up to four awards.
