A Legacy of Service

Carlos B. Gayles, M.D.

My "favorite foundation story" is more like a definition. I was asked by John Doe, some years ago, "What is a foundation?" I thought for a moment, and then said to him that it's an organization of benevolent citizens who return to their community some of the monies that they earned working within and for that community. In a general sense, we are our "brothers' keepers." He was satisfied.

This history is based on A Legacy of Service, a publication of Four County Community Foundation. The Foundation wishes to thank Emeritus Board members David Bishop, John Bishop, James T. Ligon Sr., and Edmund Risch for their time and dedication in agreeing to serve as the Historical Committee to research and compile this history. Also, thanks to the many people across the country who answered questions, sent their stories and pictures, and allowed us to share them.
